Three Books by Dallas Willard

Dallas Willard has impacted my life and thoughts on discipleship and spiritual formation more than any other person outside of Jesus. I’ve previously mentioned some of his books here. Since his death in May of 2013, several books have been released and more are on the way based on the plethora of content he had produced and taught through the years but haven’t been published as of yet (you can learn more about them here).

Here are 3 you should get and read today:

  • The Divine Conspiracy Continued: Fulfilling God’s Kingdom on Earth
Co-authored by Dallas Willard and Gary Black Jr., this book is the sequel to The Divine Conspiracy and continues Dallas’s series on the Kingdom of God by looking at God’s plan to intervene in human history through His disciples who live out His calling in their life through their professions. To fulfill the Christian calling is not to remove oneself from the outside world and take shelter from its shortcomings, but to step into the world to lead and serve as agents of change. Dallas and Gary provide wise guidance on how to enter into our culture’s leadership positions and transform the world from the inside out.
  • Renewing the Christian Mind: Essays, Interviews and Talks
Compiled, edited, and introduced by Dr. Gary Black Jr., Renewing the Christian Mind is a collection of Dallas’s teachings that brilliantly encapsulate his spiritual philosophy and his contributions to theology. For those familiar with Dallas’s previously published work, this collection offers a greater depth of understanding on a multitude of issues he believed Jesus was interested in and master over. But it is also designed as a tool to introduce a new generation of minds to Dallas’s thought and teaching. It covers a wide range of his contributions on a multitude of critical and pastoral issues the church is facing today.
  • The Allure of Gentleness: Defending the Faith in the Manner of Jesus
When Christians share their faith, they often appeal to reason, logic, and the truth of doctrine. But these tactics often are not effective. A better approach to spread Christ’s word, Dallas Willard suggests, is to use the example of our own lives. To demonstrate Jesus’s message, we must be transformed people living out a life reflective of Jesus himself, a life of love, humility, and gentleness. This beautiful model of life—this allure of gentleness—Willard argues, is the foundation for making the most compelling argument for Christianity, one that will convince others that there is something special about Christianity and the Jesus we follow.

Your turn… If you know someone who would enjoy these resources, share them with them today. Also, how have you been impacted by the work of Dallas Willard?
